I originally posted this over on r/kittens when the three boys and their mama first came to us, but now we have a new member here.

Long story short, mama cat gave birth in my neighbour's backyard, but she relocated herself and her kittens (all male; two orange and one grey) to our backyard and took up residence under our porch. Mama is feral and was extremely skittish around humans. The boys were like that

at first as well, which I think is just learned behaviour on their part, so it's been a bit of a challenge to get the boys to trust us. Mama took off in the middle of July and has been hanging around elsewhere in the neighbourhood. The boys have been much more adventurous since then, and they've been very

receptive to the attention that we give them. We can now pet them, hand feed them, play with them, and approach them without them running away or being too skittish.

Ultimately, I'm trying to get them in my house so they can be taken out of the outdoors and given to trusted friends and family. It's been a slow process, but I think we'll be there soon. They've started coming in the house of their own accord, so I expect it will only be a matter of time that they want to come inside and stay inside.

My bedroom window faces the backyard, and last week, I heard meowing. I don't hear the boys meow very often, so I was immediately worried. We tend to have a lot of possums and racoons in our area, especially in our backyard and the neighbour's backyard, so I thought they may have been cornered or injured.

After searching in the middle of the night, I could see that they boys were scattered all around the yard looking at something. It took about 10 minutes just to get one look at what they were so interested in. Another. Gd in. Kitten.

I have no idea where it came from or how it even got to my yard in the first place. I spent three hours trying to catch it and was unsuccessful so I ended up giving up that night and just praying it would be okay until the morning. I tried that morning after hearing meowing, and again, no luck. That night, I had

forgotten to put on the backyard light for the boys, which I always do now just to be able to quickly look outside and take note of anything. That's when I saw them all sitting together watching the little black kitten. I put a plate of wet food out and the kitten immediately made a beeline for it, and the boys just watched it eat and only joined after half of it was gone. They slept together on the

porch that night and now they've been together every day since. It seems like they've taken the kitten under their wing and are very protective of it. CDS: please give me a break for a little while.

Edit: because I've seen a few comments regarding this. I plan on getting them neutered as soon as possible. I've reached out to a local TNR place and am awaiting a response. Mama is no longer in my immediate area and I don't know where she spends the majority of her time so it will be hard for them to track her down. SPCA is of no help because they're grossly overrun as it is. I'm trying my best!! Thank you everyone for the tips.
